Waters wrote Heathers as a spec script and originally wanted Stanley Kubrick to direct the film, out of admiration for Kubrick’s own black comedy film Dr. Heathers was screened on October 24, 1988, at the MIFED film market in Milan, Italy, before premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January 1989. New World Pictures theatrically released the film in the United States on March 31, 1989.
